Sue Timm - Healthgrades Review
Dr. Timani is wonderful. She is so compassionate and knowledgeable. My family has a history of a lot of skin cancer and my brother died at 54 from Melanoma. I have had Squamous Cell Carcinoma and have a great deal of precancerous damaged skin. Dr. Timani is treating it aggressively and she is thorough and supportive. I moved to GA in June 2018 and feel so blessed to have found her.PATIENT REVIEWS
When a Spot Changes, Clarity Matters
A new mole. A spot that won’t heal. A lesion that bleeds or changes color.
When something on your skin looks different, uncertainty can feel unsettling. Early evaluation is the most important step.
At Springs Dermatology MD in Sandy Springs, skin cancer screenings and diagnostic evaluations are performed by Dr. Shereen Timani, a triple board-certified dermatologist with advanced training in Dermatology, Dermatopathology, and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery. This integrated expertise allows for accurate evaluation from exam through diagnosis, and when needed, appropriate treatment planning.
What Happens During a Skin Cancer Screening
A full-body skin exam is a thorough, head-to-toe evaluation of your skin, giving you peace of mind that every area — even those hard to see — is carefully assessed.
During your visit, we:
• Examine moles and lesions using dermoscopy
• Assess changes in size, shape, color, or borders
• Review personal and family history
• Evaluate sun damage and risk factors
• Identify areas that may require biopsy
If a concerning lesion is identified, a skin biopsy can often be performed during the same visit at our Sandy Springs office.
Skin Biopsy & Accurate Diagnosis
Accurate diagnosis is critical in skin cancer care.
Dr. Timani personally performs skin biopsies and reviews pathology findings through her board certification in Dermatopathology. This means your tissue is evaluated by the same physician overseeing your care, not interpreted in isolation by an outside laboratory.
This integrated approach supports:
• Precise diagnosis
• Clear explanation of results
• Coordinated next steps
• Continuity of care
Few dermatology practices offer this level of diagnostic integration.
A Comprehensive Approach to Skin Cancer Care
A skin cancer concern can feel overwhelming, and we believe your care should feel clear and coordinated. At Springs Dermatology MD, we streamline the process from evaluation to next steps, keeping as much of your care under one roof as possible.
Because Dr. Timani is board-certified in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (Mohs), evaluation and management are coordinated seamlessly within the same practice.
When Should You Schedule a Skin Cancer Exam?
You should consider scheduling an evaluation if you notice:
• A new or changing mole
• A lesion that bleeds, crusts, or does not heal
• Rapid growth in a spot
• A family or personal history of skin cancer
• Significant sun exposure or tanning bed history
Annual full-body skin exams are recommended for most adults, especially those with increased risk factors.
Types of Skin Cancer We Evaluate
During skin cancer screenings, our dermatologists evaluate for the following common and rare skin cancers:
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
The most common skin cancer, often related to long-term sun exposure.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
A potentially more aggressive cancer that may develop from chronic sun damage or precancerous lesions.
Melanoma
A potentially serious form of skin cancer that can spread if not detected early. Prompt evaluation and accurate diagnosis are critical for the best outcomes.
Merkel Cell Carcinoma
A rare but aggressive form often appearing as a painless nodule.
Kaposi Sarcoma
Associated with immune system suppression.
Sebaceous Gland Carcinoma
An uncommon and aggressive cancer that typically arises in the oil glands.

If Skin Cancer is Diagnosed
If skin cancer is diagnosed treatment may include non-surgical treatment plans or surgical excision or Mohs surgery for skin cancer removal, depending on the clinical situation.
The Importance of Early Detection
Skin cancer is highly treatable when detected early. Regular professional skin exams, along with monthly self-checks, play a critical role in early identification and successful outcomes.

Skin Cancer FAQ
How often should I get a skin cancer screening?
Most patients should have a full-body skin exam once a year. Patients with a history of skin cancer or higher risk factors may need more frequent screenings.
Do all suspicious moles require a biopsy?
No. Many lesions can be safely monitored. If a mole appears concerning, a biopsy may be recommended to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
Is skin cancer screening painful?
Skin exams are non-invasive and painless. If a biopsy is needed, local anesthesia is used to ensure comfort.
Do you treat both adults and children?
Yes. Our dermatology team evaluates and treats skin concerns across all ages.
